Every Plan Is a Hypothesis

 In Leadership

Every plan is a hypothesis, and parts of it will be wrong. What matters is how fast you find out, and what you do next.

A pattern I see often: someone at the top builds a plan, and everyone marches off. Leaders may later realize the plan isn’t quite right, but fail to get that news down to the people doing the work.

Or the front line sees that the plan isn’t working, but nobody is asking them what they are seeing, or what they think.

Smart organizations expect to adjust, and they build the skills and systems to do it. When a result comes in, they ask what it means and whether a course change would help.

Decide up front how you’ll know when adjustments are needed. At the outset, ask:

  • How will we know this is working?
  • What will we measure?
  • What results, signals, or external events would tell us our assumptions were wrong?

Say you’re launching a new product. Commit to listening hard to what you’re seeing and hearing. If customers aren’t interested, why? Does the product work as expected? Are you explaining it badly, targeting the wrong market, or charging too much?

Some signals are easy to track, like email responses. Others are harder, like a competitor’s next move. Anticipate what might happen and watch for it, and also be ready for surprises. Sometimes the data shows you’re asking the wrong question.

The people executing the plan see things first, so bring the front line in early. Treat them as partners before the plan is final. If they’ve helped design the measures, they’ll watch them more closely.

Make it safe to tell the truth, and give people an easy way to tell leaders what they’re seeing. People who see the plan going off the rails often think first about their job, and stay silent. Leaders have to counter that directly. Make it clear that we’re all in this together, and that reporting bad news early is part of the job.

The companies that win will notice fastest when they’re wrong, and adjust.

What’s one signal your team should be watching right now that nobody is tracking?
